Overview

As Instagram continues to grow as a space for self-expression, so does the need for more meaningful ways to connect.

Instagram has always encouraged users to build community and express themselves through like photos, captions, and even the music they're listening to. But these methods require time and effort, leaving a gap for something simpler and more direct.

User Research

Understanding what information users are comfortable with posting online

Our user group consists of 7 college students aged 18-20. We surveyed them to understand what personal information they felt comfortable sharing on their profile. We also audited existing accounts to identify which categories would feel most natural for the feature.

User Insights

Balancing self expression with control over personal information

Based on the user survey, hobbies/interests, age, and ethnicity were the 3 choices users were comfortable disclosing. Their concern over privacy is shaped by platforms' request for personal information to use their services.

Introducing Profile Tags

Streamlining digital identity on Instagram

Profile tags makes it more convenient and engaging for users to showcase aspects of their identity. It provides a more structured way to communicate who they are.

Users can update their selected tags at any time. Not everything is permanent!

Reinforcement of Instagram's Core Goal

Instagram shipped out new features to help college students connect

Shortly after the project's completion, Instagram came out with a feature that allows users to connect with classmates or friends they know from college or university. Users can also add their school onto their profile which reflects the same identity driven approach behind Profile Tags.

Reflection

Designing through the lens of a company

Instead of thinking, how would I design this? I found myself asking, "how would Instagram design this?" It was a refreshing shift to think through how a company would approach a problem and whether our solutions aligned with their core values.
